1960 Creation of the IAURP (Institut d’aménagement et d’Urbanisme de la Région Parisienne), to set up a new political initiative for urban development.

1965 IAURP prepares the first guiding scheme for the Paris region that defines a new strategy for planning and development through the implementation of important measures: new towns, the RER (Réseau Express Régional: Suburban express train), motorways and highways.

1976 The Paris Region steps down to make way for the Ile-de-France Region: the Institute for Urban Planning and Development of Paris (IAURP) becomes the Institute for Urban Planning and Development of the Ile-de-France Region (IAURIF). The 1965 master plan is updated and approved.

1977 IAURIF establishes the principles for a true regional policy for the environment with the project for green open space system and the creation of Intermediate Natural Zones

1982 IAURIF presents the first inventory of the Land-use Mode (M.O.S.) covering the entire region. The results give rise to a Regional Geographic Information System (R.G.I.S).

1983 Within the framework of the laws concerning decentralisation, IAURIF develops a scope for reflection and an action plan targeting local authorities.

1984 At the request of the Regional Council, IAURIF organises an international conference, “Metropolis 84”, to address the topic, “the problems and future of major metropolises”.

1988 In collaboration with “Ile-de-France 2000”, IAURIF initiates a long term reflection regarding regional development and the challenges posed by the globalisation of the economy and trade.

1989 IAURIF and the Regional departments develop the “Regional Development Project”, which targets five strategic sectors that could constitute the pillars for development in Ile-de-France.

1990 The state, the city of Paris, and the region, through IAURIF, work together to draw up a preliminary document for the master plan: the “White Paper”.

1991 The public debate regarding the development of Ile-de-France is officially opened by the state. With the support of the IAURIF, the Regional Council is highly instrumental in drawing up the “Charter of Ile-de-France”.

1993 IAURIF actively participates in projects for the Standing Conference for Chairmen of Regional Councils in the Greater Paris Basin: today, regional development is considered within a large basin of solidarity, in close collaboration with the seven surrounding regions.

1995 Creation of the Regional Nature Park of the French Vexin, resulting from a study carried out by the IAURIF.

1998 Upon request of the Executive of the Ile-de-France Region, IAURIF draws up an assessment of the situation in Ile-de-France in 1998, “Present Realities – Future issues”, and proposes new strategies for the coming years.

1999 IAURIF is instrumental in the creation of the 2000-2006 STATE/REGION five years Development Programme

40 years of fore-planning for the development of the Ile-de-France Region

2001 The Institute carries out numerous studies through networks with the other European metropolises on the topics of the economic competitiveness, planning, public transports and airports.
