> Introduction

In December 2001 IAURIF published a panorama of its international actions since 1995 under the title "Managing the Developing Cities. New Practices". The unifying theme of these actions being urban governance.

The pages presented here are excerpts of each of the three parts of the publication. The Regional Development Agency set up in Dakar (Senegal) and the GIS built for Manila (Philippines) were chosen to illustrate part one which deals with the tools and structures in charge of monitoring urban development.

The project for a third underground line in Cairo is a sample of part two that focuses on transportation issues. The project in Santiago de Chile is an excerpt from the third and last part of the panorama and tackles some of the new metropolitan and regional issues.
